In today’s quickly evolving world, diversity and fresh perspectives are essential in all industries, including the skilled trades. Evelyn Garcia, a maintenance technician apprentice at Cushman & Wakefield, exemplifies the importance of embracing individuality. Evelyn's journey in this field stands out, not just for her technical skills, but for the strength, independence, and passion she brings to the table.
Growing up, Evelyn was no stranger to working with her hands. She credits her family for nurturing her curiosity about how things work. "My grandfather is a welder, and my dad is a mechanic. I've always been surrounded by people figuring things out," she recalls. This early exposure gave her the confidence to pursue a field where she could apply her hands-on approach daily. "They always taught me that I could accomplish anything.” With this mindset, Evelyn entered her apprenticeship with a hunger to learn, ready to tackle any challenges that come her way.
Evelyn’s apprenticeship took her to Dallas College in Texas for an intensive in-classroom certification program, also known as Required Technical Training (RTI). This journey was both exciting and intimidating – it marked Evelyn’s first time away from her family, and the homesickness was tough. "It was overwhelming, but it really pushed me out of my comfort zone."
Despite the challenges, Evelyn found solace and support in her cohort, bonding over shared experiences. “Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and we formed strong bonds quickly, which made a big difference.”
During RTI, Evelyn was able to deepen her technical knowledge in areas such as electricity, PLCs, and mechanics. She discovered how much she enjoyed the hands-on, problem-solving aspects of the field. Evelyn highlights how diversity—whether gender, background, or perspective—brings value to the job. “Everyone has different experiences. I’ve approached problems in ways they wouldn’t have thought of because of my unique perspective."
Reflecting on her journey so far, Evelyn is most proud of the confidence she’s gained. Once shy, she now speaks up and asserts herself on the job, knowing she belongs. “In the past, I was quite shy and struggled with public speaking. Now, I can approach anyone and engage in conversation with ease. I have confidence in my answers and know that I truly belong here." This newfound confidence has inspired her to aim high in her career. Evelyn is especially drawn to controls, an area that fascinates her because of the complexity and creativity it demands.
For young women considering a similar path, Evelyn's advice is simple: “Take the leap! This opportunity not only provides valuable learning experiences but also allows you to expand your horizons. There are so many ways to gain knowledge, whether you learn best through books, hands-on experience, or real-world engagement.” Evelyn believes that women are often more capable in hands-on roles than they give themselves credit for, and the industry needs more creative, diverse minds.
Evelyn’s story is just one example of how apprenticeships can transform not just technical skills but confidence and personal growth. Her journey is a reminder that there’s room for everyone in the skilled trades—regardless of gender or background—and that with the right support and mindset, the sky’s the limit.
