How to Build an Eye-Catching Resume: Skilled Trades

Being a recruiter for the last 9 years, I cannot stress enough how important your resume is as this is your first impression to a potential employer.  As a recruiter, I look at hundreds, if not thousands of resumes a week, so being able to differentiate yourself in the first step of the application process is huge. Having an up to date, accurate resume, demonstrates professionalism, and that you’re proactive and organized, which can reflect positively on your work ethic and set you apart from other applicants. It shows that you care enough about the application process to present your qualifications in the best light and often, if you’re resume looks poor, it’s an easy way to get yourself eliminated from the job.

With each job application, you may need to tailor your resume to align with the specific role you’re applying for. Skilled trades jobs often require specific technical knowledge and hands on practical experience. Having a precise resume highlights your proficiency in the necessary tools, machinery, techniques, and processes relevant to the job. This will help future employers assess if you have the skills required for the position. Many trades positions have specific certifications or qualifications that are mandatory and often, if this is not listed on your resume, you may be passed up on an opportunity just based on the volume of applicants. If you’ve taken on new responsibilities, completed any certifications, or gained further education, you want to highlight these achievements to prove your continuous growth. When your resume is detailed and accurate, it really helps you stand out from other applicants. Employers will be able to see that you’ve worked in similar environments, have relevant hands-on experience, or even specializations, which can give you an advantage.
