Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Head – Legal or a designated member of the Legal team, the Legal Intern will provide day-to-day support to the India legal function on basic legal, litigation, research, documentation and coordination activities. The role is designed to provide practical exposure to an in-house legal function and will involve maintaining legal trackers, coordinating with external counsel, assisting with draft notices and correspondence, conducting legal research, and supporting general legal administration under supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and regularly update litigation, claims, notices and other legal trackers with accurate status, hearing dates, next steps and key documents. Coordinate with external counsel for updates on ongoing litigation, upcoming hearings, filings, court orders, invoices and other matter-related information. Assist in preparing first drafts of legal notices, responses, simple correspondence, internal notes and summaries under guidance from the Legal team. Conduct basic legal research on statutes, rules, case law, regulatory updates and legal issues relevant to C&W’s India operations. Compile, organise and maintain legal documents, case papers, contracts, notices, pleadings and correspondence in an orderly and accessible manner. Assist with preparing summaries, status reports, meeting notes and internal updates for legal matters. Support coordination with internal business and support teams for collecting documents, factual inputs and approvals required for legal matters. Undertake other basic legal, research, documentation and administrative tasks as assigned by the Legal team.

  • Accuracy, completeness and timely updating of litigation and legal trackers.
  • Responsiveness in obtaining updates from external counsel and internal stakeholders.
  • Quality and clarity of research notes, matter summaries and first drafts prepared under supervision.
  • Timely organisation and maintenance of legal files, documents and matter records.
  • Ability to follow instructions, seek guidance where required and escalate important updates promptly.
  • Professional conduct, attention to detail, confidentiality and willingness to learn.

Candidate Profile

Experience

Law student in the final or penultimate year of a five-year law course, or pursuing a three-year law degree, with interest in litigation, corporate legal work, legal research and in-house legal operations. Prior internship experience with a law firm, counsel, court, corporate legal department or legal research role would be preferred but is not mandatory.

Skills

  • Good legal research and analytical skills.
  • Basic drafting ability for legal notices, summaries, emails and internal notes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate trackers and records.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with external counsel, internal teams and other stakeholders under supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and legal research tools.
  • Organised, dependable and able to manage timelines for assigned tasks.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Education

Currently pursuing a law degree from an accredited university or law school.
